FOSS Essential Training in Nepal

Over 27 participants from private, government, media and non-government sector inlcuding IT professionals, Academia and students from different organizations took part in a two-day training program on Free/Open Source Software (FOSS)named “FOSS Essentials Training 2007” at Yala Maya Kendra, Lalitpur, Nepal on March 17-18, 2007. It was the first Free/Open Source Software training of its kind in Nepal. The key objective was to create an awareness about FOSS among general computer users, promote the use of FOSS and to build a network of FOSS practitioners and trainers in Nepal.

FOSS Essentials Training 2007 was jointly organized by FOSS Nepal
Community and the Center for International Cooperation for
Computerization (CICC), Singapore. The event was supported by National
Information Technology Center (NITC) Govt. of Nepal, and Madan Puraskar Pustakalaya (MPP, Nepal) while BellaSAP (www.bellanet.org) supported this training by providing special financial support to women
candidates for the training.

A broad range of topics were covered in the 2-day training including
hands-on experience with installing GNU/Linux, Basic System
Administration, Migration to FOSS, Localization, Collaboration in FOSS,
PHP and MySQL Basics, Content Management Systems (CMS), Wiki, Blog, etc. There were resource persons from ICC-Singapore(www.cicc.org.sg), FOSS Nepal Community(www.fossnepal.org), BellaSAP and Madan Puraskar
Pustakalaya(www.mpp.org.np).
